The Boston Smoked Fish Company produces hand-crafted, ready-to-eat smoked fish with an unmistakable, craveable flavor.
Our mission is to make healthy eating both easy and enjoyable. We have an obsession with craft that is unconstrained by tradition, resulting in an original, exciting, and even surprising experience for our customers.
Through responsible sourcing, rigorous craftsmanship, and deep community partnerships, we are proud to add our distinctively delicious smoked fish to Boston’s reputation for world-class seafood.
It all started in the backyard in 2013 when two smoked fish enthusiasts and food lovers decided to try and push the envelope, making smoked fish with a richer more delicious flavor while being minimally processed with honest, simple ingredients.
Working with a home smoker and experimenting with 72 different brine recipes, multiple sources of fresh fish, and different hardwoods, Chris and Matt finally found what they were looking for. To share their passion and delicious results with friends and families, they purchased a vacuum sealer and began packaging the fish they smoked.
You’ll taste a wonderful harmony of flavors–all from whole and honest ingredients–in each bite of our smoked fish. Blessed with the abundance of farmers market opportunities in the Greater Boston area, Chris and Matt turned in their former day jobs as lawyers and started smoking fish full time. Today we pursue the art of smoking fish at our home on the Historic Boston Fish Pier. The rest is history!
Originally from Michigan, Matt moved to Boston in 2004 to attend law school. Although his career began in law, his lifelong love of cooking, experimenting with flavors, and bringing people together through food eventually led him in a new direction. In 2013, he left his legal career to launch Matt’s The Amazing Smokehouse, which in 2015 became The Boston Smoked Fish Company.
Matt leads the hardworking team at the smokehouse and oversees every step of the process, from selecting fresh fish to pairing it with spices and aromatic smoke in small batches and everything in between. His goal is simple: to make sure every piece that leaves the facility is among the best smoked fish you can find. Matt takes great pride in knowing that Boston Smoked Fish products help make breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and celebrations more memorable.
Outside of work, he enjoys playing hockey, fishing, gardening, playing the violin, and cheering on his alma mater, the Michigan State University Spartans. He lives on the South Shore with his wife, who helps with sales and marketing, and their three children.
Having grown up on the ocean it’s fitting that Chris would one day find himself as the owner of a seafood business. And to do it in Boston, his hometown, is especially exciting. Inspired by his friend Matt’s initiative to start the first smoked fish company in the city, Chris quickly joined alongside him to help grow the business and bring our distinctively delicious recipes to as many new customers as possible.
As a fellow owner, Chris wears a lot of hats, but what he finds most rewarding is fostering relationships with those who share our values of thoughtfully-prepared, all-natural products that are healthy and delicious. His goal is to see Boston Smoked Fish expand its reach without ever losing its identity as an artisanal operation and a fixture of Boston’s thriving farmer’s market community.
Like Matt, Chris has a background in law and classical music. In his spare time he loves going to Fenway, playing piano, writing music, and heading out on the water whenever he can.
